Arcachon Bay
A lagoon between ocean and forest, lived to the rhythm of the tides. Oyster huts, the Pilat dune and villas under the pines.

The bay empties and fills twice a day, and that changes everything: the same sandbanks are beach in the morning and channel in the afternoon. On the north shore, Cap Ferret strings together oyster villages where you eat standing up, facing the beds. To the south, Arcachon keeps the villas of its Ville d’Hiver, built in the nineteenth century for people taking the air. At the mouth of the bay, the Pilat dune rises above a hundred metres and retreats towards the forest each year. Check the tide table before any trip by boat: it is not a suggestion.
Getting there, when to come
Bordeaux is about an hour’s drive away, and Paris a little over two hours by TGV to Bordeaux, then a connection to Arcachon. June and September combine fine light with roads you can actually use; in August the Cap Ferret peninsula is hard to cross by car. The bicycle is the fastest way to get about there.
