The range separates two slopes that have little in common. To the north, Gordes and Roussillon look out over the plain, one in grey stone, the other planted in a quarry of red ochre. To the south, Ménerbes and Bonnieux face the mountain, quieter and more lived-in year round. Between them run narrow roads, vine-growers’ huts and paths that climb quickly. The markets set the rhythm of the week: each village has its own, on a given morning, and it is better to plan your days around them than the other way round.
Getting there, when to come
Avignon TGV station is around forty minutes away and Marseille-Provence airport about an hour; a car is still needed once there. May, June and September offer the best conditions: in July and August the best-known villages are crossed at walking pace. The mistral blows mostly in winter and spring, and can make evenings markedly cold.
