Between the Adour and the Bidasoa, the coast runs some thirty kilometres and changes character every ten. Biarritz keeps the air of a Second Empire seaside resort and a swell that gave birth to European surfing. Saint-Jean-de-Luz shelters behind its breakwaters, in one of the few calm bays on this coast. Inland, the countryside rises quickly: Espelette and its garlands of peppers, Ainhoa, and La Rhune, whose little rack railway climbs to nine hundred metres. Basque is heard everywhere, on the signs as in conversation.

Getting there, when to come

Biarritz–Pays Basque airport is minutes from the coast, with TGV stations at Biarritz and Bayonne. September is often the best month: the sea is at its warmest and the beaches have emptied. It rains here more than elsewhere on this coast, summer included — plan something for half a day indoors.
